As a counselling psychologist, I see each client as being a unique individual and I tailor treatment to meet the needs of each client. I work intergratively, drawing upon a variety of evidence-based therapeutic models. Whilst I predominately work using a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approach, I also integrate other models including mindfulness, psychodynamic, person-centred and schema approaches according to a client’s individual needs.

My doctoral research looked at couple relationships and women’s health issues, specifically heterosexual couples’ experiences of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). This topic stemmed from an interest and curiosity of the impact of difficulties, such as stress and illness on couple relationships.

My professional experience:

I have over 10 years experience working as a psychologist with a range of clients in a variety of settings. Within the healthcare environment, I have worked in a GP surgery, 3rd tier IAPT service and intermediate care service as well as two hospices where I counselled patients and bereaved relatives.

In addition, I have experience in work-based counselling for operational and non-operational staff at the London Fire Brigade, focussing mainly on trauma and managerial/team relationship issues. I have also worked alongside other physical and alternative therapists in a holistic therapy centre for women in Islington.

In addition to my clinical work, I supervise doctoral research for trainee psychologists and sit on viva panels for final year psychotherapists at the Metanoia Institute.

My previous career was health and social management with a particular interest in commissioning and developing community services such as IAPT and ME/CFS services.

My personal statement:

I offer counselling and psychotherapy to people wishing to explore and change a part of their life which is causing them distress or confusion.
I am trained in a number of different therapeutic techniques, therefore I tailor my approach to each person depending on a number of factors, for example what they are looking for, how many sessions they want, whether they want to be more structured or free-flowing and/or if they wish to focus on the here-and-now or make some connections with the past.

From many years’ experience, I have learnt that people get the most from the process when they are ready to explore what might be stopping them from changing in the way they want, even though they wish for things to be different; I see fear and resistance as normal and creative as they are often on the cusp of something more productive and remedial.

I have a particular interest in working with somatic symptoms in the body and helping sensitive or intuitive people understand themselves. My doctoral research focussed on intergenerational trauma and what people might carry unconsciously and emotionally from the experiences of their ancestors.

As a practitioner, I combine a strong grounding in psychotherapeutic theory and technique through my extensive training with my reflections and experience as a fellow human being who understands the joys and vicissitudes of life. I believe that I am rooted and realistic whilst also being open to what is unknowable and trying to emerge.

  • Clinical Doctorate in Psychotherapy
  • Post-Graduate Qualification in Psychotherapy
  • MA in  Working  with People with Eating  Disorders
  • Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy
  • British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP Accred)

My professional experience:

I have been practicing psychotherapy in the NHS and private healthcare for over twenty years. I offer general psychotherapy, as well as specialist Eating Disorder Therapy. In addition to my work at the Nightingale Hospital, I currently work at the Child and Family Practice, and in private practice. Before that I was Lead Psychotherapist in both  Adolescent and Adult Eating Disorder Services at The Priory Hospital Roehampton for ten years. Previously, I have worked in University Counselling Services, GP Practices, Community Mental Health Teams, working with a variety of people from all backgrounds, presenting with a wide range of difficulties.

I have a research-based Clinical Doctorate in Psychotherapy from  the  University of Essex, looking into the treatment of Anorexia Nervosa. I also have  a Masters Degree in Working with Eating Disorders from the Tavistock  Centre. I qualified as a Counsellor at Regent’s College in 1997, and as a Psychotherapist at the Lincoln Centre (A British Psychotherapy Training)  in 2004.

As well as working with Eating Disorders, I specialise in treating depression, anxiety, self-harm, relationship difficulties, and general life changes.

My personal Statement:

My personal approach to therapy is based on building a collaborative relationship, where a sense of safety and trust can develop. This can allow clients to talk about their life and experiences with a view to learning more about themselves and their underlying thoughts and patterns of behaviour. This in turn can  allow clients greater choice over the way they are living their lives, and can help them feel able to make positive changes. Clients are not judged in the sessions, instead  they are listened to with encouragement. The process can be challenging and thought provoking, but can help give people far greater freedom and fulfilment in their lives.

I specialise in working with people with eating disorders, and have carried out research in this area. I am also very  intersted in working with people of all ages, focusing on difficulties with mood, depression, anxiety, and with general challenges of life and life transitions. I have a training in working psychodynmically, but would describe my work as supportive psychotherapy drawing largely on mentalisation-based therapy and motivational enhancement. I also offer Cognitive Remediation Therpy for Eating Disorders.

  • Post-Graduate Diploma in Person-Centred Counselling – University of Strathclyde
  • Bachelor of Architecture – University of the Witwaterstrand
  • UKCP Registered
  • MBACP Accredited

My professional experience:

After qualifying and working as an architect I trained as a Person-Centred Counsellor and subsequently as a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist. I bring almost 15 years of clinical experience arising from a broad range of settings which includes the NHS, the voluntary sector, the  private hospital sector, inpatient and outpatient care and my private  practice. Furthermore, I set up and managed a pioneering, pilot programme for Age UK, funded by the Department of Health, which offered therapy to older people with Dementia. This was subsequently mainstreamed.

I have worked with clients from across the lifespan with diverse backgrounds and presenting with a broad range of issues which I continue to work with. I have also specialised in eating dsorders having worked at the Eating Disorder Unit at  the  Priory Hospital for 5 years.

My personal statement:

I believe  that a non-judgmental therapeutic relationship in which safety can be fostered, can offer a unique opportunity for genuine support, change and development. Often we can find ourselves stuck in conscious and unconcious patterns of living, resulting from earlier difficulties and traumas.

In my work I aim to offer the opportunity to create such a secure base, in which painful experiences can be thought and spoken about. With awareness comes the choice to change what is preventing us from leading a more fulfilled and happier life. Together with understanding what is painful and difficult, I feel it is important to work with the resilience and resourcefulness present in individuals. I am interested in how early attachment issues have influenced individuals’ lives and how through the therapeutic relational experience, clients  can learn a new way of relating.

I work in the here and now, with the difficulties a current problem is presenting, but also  through using attachment theory and working psychodynamically I aim for sense to be made of what has happened and  ultimately a better understanding of the self. In my work I also include concepts and practices of mindfulness.

The work is collaborative with reviews at regualr intervals in order to assess the efficacy and direction of the work. Aside from a specialisation on eating disorders, I have extensive experience working with anxiety, depression, work stress, self-esteem, relationship difficulties, loss and trauma, bereavement and personality disorders.

  • PG Dip. Psychodynamic Theory and Practice (WPF Therapy, London)
  • Registered member, BACP

Professional Statement:

I’m a fully-qualified Psychodynamic psychotherapist.

I also ran a derivatives trading team before training as a psychotherapist, so I understand the high-pressure modern work environment and what it can take to maintain emotional balance in contemporary life.
I’m co-founder and Director of The Courtyard Garden Psychotherapy and Counselling practice in Victoria, where my colleagues and I now see over 120 people a week for ongoing psychotherapy in private practice.

As a member of the BACP, my clinical work is consistent with the highest ethical standards required of this professional body.

Personal Statement:

As a psychodynamic psychotherapist, I’m interested in how your past experiences may have shaped your current behaviour. We’ll think together about your significant childhood relationships, and how they may have a bearing on any current distress. We’ll consider your relationships with yourself, with others – and with me in the room.
I work with most general mental health disorders – depression, anxiety and anger issues – but I’m also particularly interested in the areas of loss and bereavement.
For more than twenty years I’ve also been helping people battle addictions, and I understand the emotional challenges involved in achieving long-term sobriety. If you’re acknowledging that addiction is an issue for you, let’s think together about why you “act out”. Why do you use alcohol or drugs in ways that prove self-destructive? If you can gain more understanding about your addiction, you’ll be more able to make healthier choices. It’s likely that you reach for something external in an attempt to deal with emotional issues that feel overwhelming. In our work together, you’ll build a stronger sense of self – a more robust internal sense of safety – so that you’ll be better able to tolerate situations or feelings that now make you fall into active addiction.
My training was based in the analytic tradition, but I’m on the relational scale of things – warm and welcoming. If appropriate, there can be humour in the room. Our sessions will feel like a safe conversation, where you’ll be able to speak freely about your concerns.

Professional experience:

I bring over 15 years experience as a Clinical Psychologist and Psychotherapist to my role at Nightingale Hospital. I have worked in a number of settings and roles, including public and private psychiatric hospitals and in private practice. I was previously the Consultant Clinical Psychologist on the Eating Disorder and Adolescent Unit at Tara Psychiatric Hospital (South Africa), where I provided psychological assessment and therapeutic oversight to the unit and the therapeutic team. I also worked as a lecturer and supervisor on two professional psychology training programmes in South Africa: the Masters in Clinical Psychology at the University of the Witwatersrand and the Masters in Counselling Psychology at Pearson Institute of Higher Education.

My training and clinical experience has primarily been in the field of medium to long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy. However, I also have experience in providing short-term interventions, such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Systemic Family Therapy and Narrative approaches. While my primary theoretical orientation is psychodynamic in nature, I adopt an integrative approach to working with patients, incorporating techniques and theory from a variety of approaches in order to best assist whoever I am working with. A psychodynamic approach is interested in understanding the meaning and origin of whatever psychological, emotional, physical or behavioural symptoms someone may be experiencing. It is invested in helping individuals understand that which they are unaware of, in terms of their unconscious needs, wishes, thoughts and memories.

I have experience in treating a variety of psychiatric conditions and everyday difficulties. These include mood disorders (depression, anxiety, panic, bipolar, OCD), eating disorders, traumatic experiences, complicated bereavement, relationship and interpersonal difficulties, work stress, sexuality, and body image disturbance.

Professional Statement:

I believe that any therapeutic experience should always begin with the establishment of a human connection. The relationship between the therapist and the patient is a crucial part of the success of the process. I provide a confidential, safe and containing space for individuals to bring whatever is troubling them at present. Together we will explore what brings you to see me and make an assessment of how I can help you. If you require assistance that I cannot provide them I am able to refer you to a colleague who may be better suited to your needs.

For me the goal of psychotherapy is to allow you to live your life in a manner that is less inhibited or constrained, thus allowing yourself to experience pleasure and joy from whatever you take part it. This process will be different for each individual, and in some cases may take some time to achieve, but ultimately it should be seen as an investment in yourself and your future.

I am strongly committed to ongoing professional development in order to continue to develop my core skills, as well as learn new ones. Attending supervision with senior colleagues is part of my development as a practitioner so that I can provide the best possible care to my patients.

I have been accredited with the British Association for Cognitive & Behavioural Psychotherapies (BABCP) since 2013 and have 9 years post qualification experience of using CBT, with much of my clinical work taking place within various NHS settings. My clinical experience includes working within the criminal justice system, community alcohol charities, schools and university settings as well as health and primary care psychology settings.

Personal Statement:

CBT and CFT form the foundations of my clinical practice. I will also draw upon other third wave approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness, Solution Focused Therapy (SFT), Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Person-Centered psychotherapy

Initial sessions will focus on detailed assessment of both current and historical information in order to fully understand the nature and maintenance of the difficulties that you are presenting with. Based on assessment, a treatment plan will be devised for the course of therapy with regular reviews to assess progress.

My sessions are collaborative in nature, structured, and goal orientated, however, I am also flexible in my approach as there may be times when we need to shift from the more structured sessions, into deeper more reflective work on thoughts and feelings. I aim to provide a safe and confidential space for therapy to take place in and to facilitate the change process in a way that feels respectful and in line with the client’s goals.
